From Interest to Action: How AI Can Reduce Friction and Create a Clearer Next Step
For years, much of the conversation around AI in marketing has focused on content.
Write more blog posts.
Create more social media.
Generate more emails.
Produce more ad variations.
But there may be a much more valuable opportunity hiding in plain sight.
What if AI's biggest marketing impact isn't creating more content, but helping interested prospects take the next step? That changes the role of AI completely. Instead of thinking about AI as a content engine, think about it as a conversion layer that sits between customer interest and customer action.
The Problem Isn't Always Lack of Interest
Many businesses spend enormous amounts of time trying to generate awareness and interest. They invest in SEO, paid advertising, social media, email, content marketing, and other channels designed to get someone to raise their hand. But what happens next?
A prospect fills out a form and waits.
Someone sends a message and receives a generic response.
A customer visits a service page but isn't sure what to do next.
Someone asks a question through social media and gets directed to a website.
The business successfully generated interest, but the customer journey still contains friction and every unnecessary step creates another opportunity for the prospect to disappear. This is where AI becomes particularly interesting.
Step 1: Capture the Signal
The first step is recognizing that customer intent can come from almost anywhere.
A potential customer might:
Fill out a website form
Start a live chat
Call the business
Respond to an email
Send a social media message
Click an advertisement
Visit a pricing page
Interact with a Google Business Profile
Instead of treating each interaction as an isolated event, an AI system can bring those signals together.
The objective isn't simply to collect information, it's to understand why the person is engaging.
Step 2: Let AI Interpret Intent
Consider someone who says: "I need my AC checked. It's blowing warm air."
A basic automated system might respond with a generic message thanking them for contacting the company. An AI-powered system can do considerably more.
It could identify:
Service: AC diagnostic
Problem: Unit blowing warm air
Location: Jacksonville
Potential urgency: High
Intent: Service request
That context gives the system something much more valuable than a contact record, it gives it intent.
Step 3: Determine the Next Best Action
Once AI understands intent, it can determine what should happen next.
Not every prospect needs the same response.
A high-intent prospect may need an appointment.
Someone earlier in the buying journey may need an answer to a specific question.
Someone who isn't ready may need additional information.
Someone who isn't a good fit may need to be redirected.
The important distinction is that the system isn't simply asking, “What content should we send?" It's asking, "What should happen next?"
That’s a fundamentally different marketing question.
Step 4: Remove the Friction
This is where the concept becomes particularly powerful.
Imagine the customer says their AC is blowing warm air.
Instead of sending them to another page, the AI could respond: "That sounds like a diagnostic service call. We have appointments available Tuesday at 10 AM or Wednesday at 2 PM. Which works better?"
The customer doesn't have to figure out what service they need.
They don't have to search for the scheduling page.
They don't have to submit another form.
They simply choose the next step.
AI has reduced the distance between interest and action.
Step 5: Connect Everything to the CRM
The AI shouldn't operate as a disconnected chatbot, the real value comes when it connects with the systems already running the business.
That might include the:
Website
CRM
Calendar
Email and SMS
Advertising platforms
Google Business Profile
Knowledge base
Payment systems
Marketing automation platform
The interaction can then create or update a customer record automatically.
Instead of a CRM containing nothing more than, John Smith | Phone Number | Lead, it could contain:
Need: AC diagnostic
Urgency: High
Location: Jacksonville
Source: Website
Appointment: Tuesday, 10 AM
Conversation: Attached
Next Step: Confirm appointment
That's a dramatically more useful lead record.
Step 6: Make the Human Handoff Smarter
AI doesn't have to replace the human. In many cases, its most valuable role may be making the human interaction better.
When a salesperson or service professional needs to step in, they shouldn't have to start from zero. They should receive the context.
They know what the customer wants, what questions they've asked, what information they've provided, and what the recommended next action is. The customer gets a smoother experience, the employee gets a qualified conversation, and the business gets a more efficient process.
The Bigger Marketing Opportunity
This is why I believe the next phase of AI marketing will be less about producing more and more about reducing friction.
AI can help businesses move from, Interest → Intent → Next Best Action → Action → CRM → Human Handoff
That is much more than automation, it is journey orchestration.
The businesses that understand this distinction will stop asking, "How can AI help us create more content?"
Instead, they'll start asking, "Where are customers getting stuck, and how can AI help them move forward?" Because generating attention is only the beginning.
The real opportunity is turning that attention into action with less friction, fewer unnecessary steps, and a clearer path forward. AI doesn't just need to help businesses say more. It needs to help customers do more.
