Search Is Changing: How AI Is Reshaping SEO in 2026

For years, digital marketing had a simple objective: Get found on Google!

Rank higher. Earn the click. Drive traffic to your website.

That strategy still matters. But search behavior is changing, and marketers need to understand what is actually happening rather than assuming AI has suddenly replaced traditional search.

The latest State of Search Q2 2026 report from Semrush provides an interesting look at that shift. The report analyzed real user behavior across 10 million desktop users in the United States and Europe, offering a useful perspective on how people are actually searching. And one finding stands out.

ChatGPT climbed to #7 among the sites people visit after a search.

Google, meanwhile, fell outside the top 15 in this particular ranking. That sounds like a massive disruption, but the bigger story is more nuanced.

Google Isn't Disappearing

One of the most important findings from the report is that traditional search remains strong even as AI usage grows. That matters because the conversation around AI search often becomes overly simplistic.

It's tempting to say: "Google is dead. Everyone is using ChatGPT now."

The data doesn't support that conclusion. Instead, we're seeing search behavior expand.

People are still using traditional search engines. At the same time, they're increasingly using AI platforms and other specialized websites to research, compare, evaluate, and understand information.

In other words, the search journey is becoming more fragmented.

Search Is Becoming a Multi-Platform Experience

Look at the destinations appearing near the top of the Q2 2026 ranking:

  1. YouTube

  2. Reddit

  3. Amazon

  4. Facebook

  5. Wikipedia

  6. Instagram

  7. ChatGPT

  8. Fandom

  9. TikTok

  10. LinkedIn

This list tells us something important. Search isn't confined to a search engine anymore. Consumers go directly to the platform that makes the most sense for the question they're trying to answer.

  • Looking for a product? Amazon.

  • Want real-world opinions? Reddit.

  • Need a tutorial? YouTube.

  • Looking for professional expertise? LinkedIn.

  • Want an explanation synthesized from multiple sources? ChatGPT.

This is why marketers need to stop thinking about search as a single channel.

AI Is Changing How People Ask Questions

Another important finding from the report is that people are increasingly searching with longer, more detailed questions and that’s significant.

Traditional keyword searches often looked something like, "best roofing company Orlando" Where AI-assisted search makes it easier to ask something more specific, "What should I look for when choosing a commercial roofing company in Jacksonville for a building with recurring water intrusion?"

Those are fundamentally different search behaviors.

The second query contains more context, intent, and criteria.

It also creates an opportunity for businesses that can provide genuinely useful, specific information.

This is where content strategy becomes increasingly important.

ChatGPT Is Only Part of the AI Search Shift

ChatGPT remains the leading AI platform identified in the report, but Gemini and Claude are also gaining ground and that reinforces another important point. You shouldn't build an "AI search strategy" around optimizing for a single platform. The platforms will continue to change.

The underlying objective should be creating information that AI systems can understand, evaluate, and potentially reference. And that means publishing content based on actual expertise, original insights, useful data, clear explanations, and real customer questions.

SEO Is Expanding

This doesn't mean SEO is going away, it means SEO is becoming broader than rankings and clicks.

For years, the primary question was, "How do we rank #1?" The emerging question is now, "How do we become a trusted source wherever our customers are searching?"

That requires a broader approach.

Your brand needs to be:

  • Discoverable

  • Understandable

  • Credible

  • Relevant

  • Consistent

  • Useful

And that visibility needs to extend beyond your website.

Your YouTube videos can become discovery assets.

Your LinkedIn content can establish expertise.

Your Reddit presence can contribute to brand visibility and credibility.

Your Google Business Profile can support local discovery.

Your website can provide authoritative source material.

And your content can give AI systems information they can understand and potentially incorporate into answers.

Search Isn't Disappearing. It's Expanding.

The biggest mistake you can make right now is treating the future of search as Google versus ChatGPT, that's not what the data suggests.

The real shift is that consumers now have more ways to discover information.

Search is becoming a broader ecosystem that includes traditional search engines, AI assistants, social platforms, communities, marketplaces, video platforms, and professional networks.

That creates a bigger challenge, but it also creates a bigger opportunity.

The brands that understand how their customers search, what questions they ask, where they look for answers, and what information they trust will be better positioned to show up throughout that journey.

The goal isn't simply to rank higher, it's to become part of the conversation. Because the future of search isn't one search box, it's everywhere your customer goes looking for an answer.
