ChatGPT is Turning Ads into Conversations

Advertising has traditionally been built around one fundamental objective: get the customer to click.

Google Ads takes someone from a search query to an ad and then to a landing page. Social media takes someone from their feed to an ad and eventually to a website. But ChatGPT is creating a different model.

OpenAI is developing advertising experiences that can turn an ad into the beginning of a conversation. Instead of simply clicking through to a website, users can interact with an AI-powered brand agent, ask questions, explore products or services, and get information before deciding whether to visit the advertiser's website. That could fundamentally change how marketers think about the advertising funnel.

From Clicks to Conversations

The traditional advertising journey looks something like this: Impression → Click → Website → Research → Conversion

Conversational advertising introduces another step: Impression → Conversation → Questions → Evaluation → Click → Conversion

That middle stage matters. Consumers rarely make decisions based on an advertisement alone. They have questions. They want comparisons. They want to understand pricing, features, compatibility, benefits and potential problems. AI can potentially handle many of those questions immediately.

The advertisement gets attention. The conversation provides information. The website facilitates the transaction.

The Landing Page May No Longer Be First

This development also challenges one of digital marketing's long-standing assumptions: that the landing page is where persuasion happens. Increasingly, customers may never reach the website until they are already significantly further along in their decision-making process.

Imagine someone searching for a commercial HVAC company and seeing an advertisement inside an AI conversation. Instead of immediately visiting the company's website, they could ask:

  • "Do you service businesses like mine?"

  • "How quickly can you respond?"

  • "What does preventative maintenance include?"

  • "What should I budget for?"

If the brand can provide useful answers, the conversation itself becomes part of the sales process. That means marketers need to think beyond landing-page conversion rates. They need to think about conversation quality.

Content Becomes Even More Important

This is where AI advertising connects directly to SEO and content strategy. You need accurate, useful and comprehensive information that AI systems can understand and use when answering questions.

That includes:

  • Detailed service and product pages

  • Frequently asked questions

  • Customer reviews

  • Original research

  • Clear pricing information where appropriate

  • Structured business information

  • Demonstrated expertise

  • Consistent information across digital platforms

Generic content becomes less valuable when AI can generate endless amounts of it. Where real expertise, proprietary information and first-party data become more valuable because they give AI systems something meaningful to work with.

A New Marketing KPI: The Conversation

For years, marketers have optimized around impressions, clicks, CPC, conversion rates, CPA and ROAS. Conversational advertising could introduce another layer of measurement: How many meaningful conversations are we creating?

Marketers may eventually need to track conversation starts, questions asked, engagement, qualified conversations, leads and revenue generated from those interactions. The shift is bigger than another advertising platform.

Advertising is moving from getting people to click toward helping people make decisions. The brands that recognize that shift early will need to build marketing that does more than attract attention. They will need marketing that can answer the questions customers ask before they ever become a lead.
